Five Guys faces U.S. closures amid expansion in Barcelona
Five Guys is experiencing contrasting developments in its global operations. In the United States, the chain is facing pressure from high operating costs and cautious consumer spending. At least 14 locations across seven states, including California, Florida, and Illinois, have closed or are scheduled to close in the first half of 2026. In California, specific closures in Whittier, City of Industry, Merced, and Hanford were attributed to financial hardship in state filings, resulting in the loss of 55 jobs. The chain’s premium pricing, with meals often reaching $25 to $30, is cited as a factor impacting its competitive position.
Simultaneously, the company is expanding its footprint in Europe. Five Guys has opened a new restaurant at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, marking its first location within a European Union airport and continental Europe. Situated in the international departures area, the restaurant aims to capture travelers waiting for non-Schengen flights. This opening brings the brand's total count in Barcelona to ten, signaling a significant presence in the city.
