Five men sentenced for attempted cargo thefts in the Netherlands
Five men have been sentenced by the Gelderland court for their involvement in a series of attempted cargo thefts targeting trucks. The investigation was triggered after police prevented a theft at a rest area in Klarenbeek on November 13, 2025. During that incident, four men were caught removing crossbars from a truck before being discovered by authorities.
Further investigation revealed that two of the suspects were responsible for attempting to steal goods from an additional eighteen trucks in the Klarenbeek and Arnhem areas by cutting open tarpaulins to inspect cargo. While the other suspects were acquitted of the additional eighteen incidents due to insufficient evidence, the court emphasized the severity of the crimes, noting that such actions cause financial damage to transport companies and create unrest among truck drivers who rely on rest areas for safety.
The two men identified as responsible for the series of attempts received prison sentences of fifteen months each. Two other defendants involved in a single attempt were sentenced to two and five months, respectively, while a fifth man was convicted as an accomplice to the failed Klarenbeek theft.
