Five Star Movement Holds Press Conference on EU Enlargement Limits in Rome

On 13 July, the Five Star Movement organized a press conference at the Chamber of Deputies in Rome to discuss the prospects and constraints of the European Union’s enlargement process. Speakers included M5S Member of the European Parliament Danilo Della Valle, deputy and party vice‑president Vittoria Baldino, senator and vice‑president Ettore Licheri, and researcher Stefano Fantacone, who presented the centre’s study.

The analysis highlighted that admitting economically weaker candidate countries could create a serious redistribution problem within the EU budget. Without a proportionate increase in common funds, the enlargement could compress financing for historically vulnerable regions, notably the Italian South, potentially hindering its development.

The event underscored the party’s concern over fiscal sustainability and the need for balanced growth across the Union as it considers further expansion.
