Italy: wealth growth amid demographic and welfare shifts

Overview

Italy continues to experience a widening divide between growing household wealth and demographic pressures. By the first quarter of 2026, Italian household financial wealth rose nearly 5% from the previous year to €6,409.5 billion. This growth was largely driven by stocks, mutual funds, insurance, and bonds, with stocks and participations reaching €2,034.9 billion, representing 31.75% of total financial wealth. This indicates a shift toward financial market exposure and long-term investments over traditional bank deposits.

Simultaneously, demographic shifts are placing new strains on regional and national welfare systems. In the Abruzzo region, the population aged over 65 has reached 25.5%, surpassing the national average of 24.7%. The number of residents over 85 in the region has grown to 55,746, representing 4.4% of the regional population. Economic disparities are also evident in pension levels, as the average annual pension in Abruzzo is €18,625, which is €1,688 lower than the national average.

Long-term projections from Istat suggest these trends will intensify; by 2050, the median age is expected to exceed 51 years, with more than one in three citizens aged 65 or older. This shift is projected to coincide with a contraction of the working-age population, dropping from 63.4% to 55.3% by 2050. Such changes pose challenges to the sustainability of the National Health Service (SSN), leading experts to emphasize the need for nursing professionals and a transition from acute hospital care toward chronic disease management and home assistance.
