Five Taiwan allies urge UN to include Taiwan in its system

Five diplomatic allies of Taiwan—Palau, Saint Lucia, the Marshall Islands, Belize, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—have issued a joint letter to United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. The letter urges the UN to find appropriate ways to include Taiwan in its system ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly general debate.

The allies presented three primary demands: first, asserting that UN Resolution 2758 does not exclude Taiwan from meaningful participation; second, emphasizing that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait are essential for global security and prosperity; and third, calling on the UN to uphold the principles of the UN Charter regarding the peaceful resolution of disputes and the prohibition of the use of force.

Representatives noted that Taiwan's exclusion of its 23 million people is regrettable and that the island could contribute significantly to global goals, particularly in areas such as semiconductor technology, environmental issues, and sustainable development. They also addressed political pressure from China, arguing that Resolution 2758 has been misinterpreted as a tool to exclude Taiwan.
