Taiwan UN participation diplomatic efforts

Efforts to secure Taiwan’s inclusion in the United Nations have intensified through diplomatic appeals from both allies and Taiwanese representatives.

Five diplomatic allies—Palau, Saint Lucia, the Marshall Islands, Belize, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—issued a joint letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The group argued that UN Resolution 2758 does not exclude Taiwan from meaningful participation and emphasized that the island’s involvement could benefit global goals in semiconductor technology and sustainable development. They also stressed that peace in the Taiwan Strait is essential for global security.

Simultaneously, Taiwan’s representative in Brazil, Benito Liao, appealed to the Brazilian public for support. Liao highlighted Taiwan’s critical role in the global technology supply chain, specifically regarding artificial intelligence and semiconductors. He also noted the strategic importance of the Taiwan Strait as a major maritime route and characterized the exclusion of Taiwan’s 23.5 million residents as “discriminatory,” citing restrictions placed on Taiwanese passport holders and journalists at UN-related events.

During the United Nations General Assembly, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña expanded this diplomatic push, stating that Paraguay will not remain neutral on the issue. Peña argued that excluding Taiwan from international organizations is a ‘stain on the United Nations’ and called for its full participation in UN specialized agencies. He noted that potential conflicts in the Taiwan Strait could impact the global economy, particularly the semiconductor industry, which he described as the ‘momentum of the 21st century.’

In response, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te expressed gratitude to diplomatic allies and democratic partners, noting that Taiwan remains a critical link in global democratic supply chains.
