Brazil football clubs protest betting ban at Maracanã

Brazilian football clubs Flamengo and Fluminense staged a joint protest during their recent Brasileirão match at the Maracanã against a government provisional measure (MP 1.394/2026) that prohibits sports betting advertising and operations. Players from both teams wore jerseys featuring the slogan 'Prohibiting is not protecting' to signal their opposition to the ban enacted by President Lula.

Flamengo supporters also participated in the demonstration, displaying banners that criticized President Lula, the National Congress, and the Supreme Federal Court (STF), claiming that Brazilian football should not be a victim of this policy. The clubs argue that the sudden ban threatens their financial stability and could drive users toward unregulated, clandestine platforms.

In other league developments, Flamengo's 1-0 victory over Fluminense has placed them at the top of the second-round standings. Meanwhile, Red Bull Bragantino ended a six-game winless streak with a 4-2 victory over Cruzeiro. Palmeiras president Leila Pereira also expressed dissatisfaction with the abruptness of the betting ban, noting its significant impact on club contracts.
