Flanders energy costs reach highest level in three years

Energy costs for households in Flanders have reached their highest levels in three years. According to data from the Flemish Regulator for Electricity and Gas, both electricity and gas expenses have surged due to wholesale market volatility driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East.

For households signing new electricity contracts in August, the expected annual cost is 1,359 euros, an increase of 73 euros compared to the previous year. While a reduction in federal excise duties provided a minor 8-euro relief, it was offset by an 81-euro rise in energy tariffs. This marks the highest electricity cost level since July 2023.

Gasoline costs have seen a more significant spike. The estimated annual cost for a typical household has risen by 290 euros to a total of 1,780 euros. This increase is attributed to a 256-euro rise in gas prices combined with a 34-euro increase in federal taxes, representing the highest gas billing level since February 2023.

These price hikes primarily impact consumers on variable-rate contracts or those seeking new contracts. Individuals currently on fixed-rate contracts are not immediately affected. The timing of these adjustments for variable users depends on whether suppliers update rates monthly or quarterly.
