Flash floods in Nepal and China cause massive destruction

A massive flash flood triggered by a glacier avalanche has caused widespread devastation across Nepal and China. The disaster occurred on August 26, when a mass of ice and rock broke off a glacier-covered slope near the Nepal-Tibet border, creating a seismic event detected by international agencies.

The resulting surge of water and debris, described by hydrologists as “liquid concrete,” swept through the Trishuli and Bhote Koshi rivers. In Nepal, the flood destroyed dozens of towns in the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, wiping out 35 motorable bridges, 45 suspension bridges, and approximately 40 kilometers of roads. The Gyirong Port crossing, a vital trade and tourism checkpoint, was also destroyed. The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that 430 megawatts of generating capacity were lost.

Casualty figures are significant, with reports confirming at least 389 deaths in Nepal and 3 in China. Over 1,500 people remain missing in Nepal, including 290 Indian nationals. Chinese authorities have issued warnings that a new lake forming behind landslide debris could potentially burst, threatening a second surge of water through the valleys.
