Flash floods worsen disaster in Philippines' Sarangani province
On 13 June 2026 heavy rains triggered flash floods in the Sarangani province towns of Maasim and Maitum, only days after a magnitude‑7.8 offshore earthquake struck the area on 8 June. The sudden surge damaged key infrastructure, including the Kumaba Bridge in Barangay Kanalo, Maasim and the Lumasal Bridge in Barangay Lumasal, forcing closures and stranding motorists.
Roads were submerged, power and telecommunications were knocked out, and police, disaster‑response teams and municipal officials conducted rescue, clearing and assistance operations while assessing damage. Residents continued to appeal for government aid as authorities evaluated the compounded impact of the floods and the earlier earthquake.
