German aviation hubs lose market share to non-EU competitors
The German aviation industry is facing a crisis characterized by rising ticket prices and a significant loss of market share for major hubs like Frankfurt and Munich. According to a report from the Bundesverband der Deutschen Luftverkehrswirtschaft (BDL), Germany is experiencing a “creeping decoupling” from global air traffic.
Data shows a sharp decline in long-haul traffic to Asia through German hubs. In 2010, Frankfurt and Munich handled 56 percent of German passengers traveling to East and Southeast Asia; by 2024, this figure dropped to approximately 36 percent. Currently, 54 percent of this traffic is being diverted to international hubs outside the European Union, primarily in the Gulf region and Turkey.
The BDL attributes this shift to high location costs and strict European regulations, specifically the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). European airlines must purchase certificates for feeder flights to their home hubs, creating a competitive disadvantage compared to non-European hubs like Dubai or Istanbul, which do not face the same requirements for long-haul segments.
