German aviation hub market share decline
Overview
The German aviation industry is experiencing a significant loss of market share as travelers increasingly utilize non-EU transit hubs. Reports from the Bundesverband der Deutschen Luftverkehrswirtschaft (BDL) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) indicate a “creeping decoupling” from global air traffic.
Data shows that the share of German passengers traveling to East and Southeast Asia via domestic hubs like Frankfurt and Munich fell from 56 percent in 2010 to approximately 36 percent in 2024. During this same period, the use of non-EU hubs for these routes rose from 33.7 percent to 54 percent. This trend is also reflected in traffic toward Africa, where transfers through the Gulf and Türkiye reached 32 percent in 2024.
Major hubs in Türkiye and the Gulf region—specifically Istanbul, Dubai, and Doha—have seen their share of connecting traffic more than double since 2010. Turkish Airlines and Istanbul Airport are identified as primary drivers of this trend, alongside major Gulf hubs, which offer competitive fares and extensive connectivity, such as single-stop routes to Australia.
The BDL attributes this shift to high location costs and strict European regulations, such as the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). Additionally, the cost of flights departing from or arriving in Germany has doubled between 2010 and 2024, rising from approximately 150 euros to 300 euros. This increase is driven by rising air transport taxes, security fees, air traffic control service charges, and increased personnel and fleet operating costs.
