Flipkart to launch food‑delivery service in Bengaluru
India’s e‑commerce giant Flipkart is preparing to enter the food‑delivery market with a pilot service slated for mid‑August in Bengaluru. The company will connect local restaurants to its platform and test the offering through both its main app and a dedicated food‑delivery app. Flipkart plans to charge restaurants around 10% commission – lower than the 16‑30% typical of incumbents Zomato and Swiggy – and may add a 2% handling fee, with sources indicating a possible ceiling of 11%.
The rollout will use the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) to avoid building a proprietary logistics network, allowing a faster launch. After gathering feedback from a select group of customers, Flipkart intends to expand the service to other Indian cities. The entry adds a new competitor to a market dominated by Zomato and Swiggy, which have already begun lowering fees in response to low‑commission models from rivals such as Rapido’s Ownly.
