Félix Tshisekedi faces criticism over constitutional push to extend his rule in DRC
Analysts and commentators warn that the proposed constitutional amendment in the Democratic Republic of Congo is aimed at consolidating President Félix Tshisekedi's power, turning him into an autocratic figure. They cite historical examples such as Mobutu and other leaders whose personalistic rule weakened institutions.
Trésor Kibangula cautioned that the government is using the ongoing conflict with Rwanda as a pretext to justify retaining power, stating, "Ce qui est déroutant aujourd'hui, c'est d'entendre le même pouvoir utiliser l'argument de la guerre pour demeurer au pouvoir." He compared the situation to Ukraine, noting that war can justify exceptional measures only if they are limited, time‑bound and broadly agreed upon.
