DRC President unveils new defense doctrine at CHESD 10th anniversary
The Collège des hautes études de stratégie et de défense (CHESD) celebrated its tenth anniversary on August 20, 2026, in Kinshasa. Since its establishment in 2016, the institution has trained 1,692 civilian and military personnel to enhance strategic thinking and national sovereignty in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
During the ceremony, President Félix Tshisekedi unveiled a new global defense doctrine for the DRC. This doctrine is built upon five key priorities: asserting sovereign strategic thought, strengthening anticipation and monitoring capabilities, ensuring digital and informational sovereignty, promoting African-led responses to regional crises, and upholding republican ethics.
The event was attended by regional leaders, including Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye and representatives from the Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic, highlighting the institution's role in regional security cooperation. Additionally, discussions between the DRC and Belgium highlighted bilateral cooperation, specifically regarding a mining investment contract between Umicore and STL for the local processing of germanium.
