Floating island appears and moves in Canada's Williston Lake

A mysterious island has appeared and disappeared within Williston Lake in British Columbia, Canada. The island, which was not present on any previous maps, measures approximately 150 meters long and 75 meters wide, covered in trees and vegetation.

Experts and BC Hydro suggest the phenomenon is a floating island. These islands typically form when vegetation and roots bind soil together, creating a mass that can drift with currents. While such islands are more common in oceans, they can develop in lakes, particularly in reservoirs that fill rapidly.

After appearing in the middle of the lake, the island was observed moving approximately 30 kilometers away from its original location toward the Ospika River. Satellite imagery has confirmed the island's existence, and it has been noted to host birds and small animals. Officials believe the island drifted toward a more sheltered area near the coast rather than sinking to the lake floor.
