Floating island movement in Williston Lake

Overview

A forested floating island has been observed moving through the Williston Reservoir in British Columbia, Canada. The mass, measuring approximately 140 to 150 meters long and 70 to 75 meters wide, consists of interconnected tree trunks, decaying wood, and vegetation that allowed mature trees to take root.

Satellite imagery confirmed the island was present in the main reservoir on July 21, though it appeared to vanish from images by August 5. Experts and BC Hydro suggest that exceptionally high water levels caused the structure to break away from the shoreline.

The island has since been observed drifting approximately 30 kilometers toward the Ospika River. While the mass hosts birds and small animals, authorities have warned the public to stay away because the island remains “highly unstable and prone to drifting.”
