Floating island drifts 30 km across Williston Reservoir

A forested floating island has been observed moving across the Williston Reservoir in British Columbia, Canada. Measuring approximately 140 meters long and 70 meters wide, the mass consists of a dense tangle of interconnected tree trunks and decaying wood that allowed plants and mature trees to take root over several years.

Satellite imagery confirmed the island's presence in the main part of the reservoir on July 21, but it had vanished from subsequent images by August 5. Experts suggest that exceptionally high water levels at the reservoir caused the massive structure to break away from the shoreline. The island was later reported to have reappeared on the Ospika River, which flows into the reservoir.

Bob Gammer, a spokesperson for BC Hydro, noted that the utility company was initially unaware of the phenomenon due to the lack of reports. Authorities are currently warning curious onlookers to stay away from the island, as it remains highly unstable and prone to drifting.
