Tamaulipas faces flooding and road closures due to heavy rains

Heavy rainfall triggered by a cold front has caused widespread flooding and infrastructure disruptions across Tamaulipas, Mexico. In Matamoros, the city experienced over 215.9 mm (8.5 inches) of precipitation, leaving several neighborhoods, including Buenavista and San Francisco, inundated. Flooding reached depths of up to one meter in some areas, damaging homes and stranding vehicles.

Transportation has been severely impacted. The Reynosa-San Fernando highway remains closed at kilometer 67 near the La Llorona bridge due to dangerous water currents. Authorities have advised motorists to use the San Fernando-Matamoros-Reynosa route as an alternative. In Ciudad Victoria, the mayor has resumed duties to oversee drainage systems and rural road conditions.

Educational disruptions were reported in Matamoros, where six schools suspended in-person classes in favor of online learning due to local flooding. While the State Secretary of Education noted that most schools remain open, parents are encouraged to prioritize safety. The State Civil Protection agency remains on alert as weather patterns continue to affect the region.
