Infrastructure and weather disruptions in Tamaulipas
Overview
Educational and infrastructure stability in Tamaulipas has been compromised by a series of localized crises. Initially, approximately 2,500 to 3,000 students were forced into remote learning due to unfinished construction, infrastructure failures, and the theft of electrical wiring and transformers in cities such as Matamoros, Reynosa, Tampico, and Ciudad Victoria.
Following these issues, heavy rainfall from a cold front caused widespread flooding across the region. In Matamoros, precipitation exceeding 215.9 mm inundated neighborhoods such as Buenavista and San Francisco, with water depths reaching up to one meter in some areas, damaging homes and stranding vehicles. This weather also caused significant transportation disruptions, including the closure of the Reynosa-San Fernando highway at kilometer 67 near the La Llorona bridge due to dangerous water currents.
In response to the flooding, six schools in Matamoros suspended in-person classes in favor of online learning, though the State Secretary of Education noted that most schools remained open. In Ciudad Victoria, the mayor resumed duties to oversee drainage systems and rural road conditions.
Recent weather events driven by a cold front have continued to impact the southern Tamaulipas region, specifically Tampico, Ciudad Madero, and Altamira. Rainfall accumulations reached up to 90 mm in Altamira and 50 mm in Tampico and Ciudad Madero. In Tampico’s Primavera neighborhood, a strong current swept a Volkswagen vehicle approximately 50 to 60 meters into a storm drain; the driver escaped unharmed. Civil Protection officials have warned of ongoing risks, including heavy rains and wind gusts of 60 to 80 kilometers per hour through the weekend.
