Flooding in Campo Bom activates municipal contingency plan as Rio dos Sinos rises

Heavy rains have caused the Rio dos Sinos to swell in Campo Bom, Brazil. Measurements on August 1 showed the river at 7.12 m, approaching the municipal flood alert level of 7.20 m, while earlier readings recorded 6.76 m. The rise prompted the city government to activate its Municipal Contingency Plan, launching the Incident Command System and mobilising the Defense Civil coordination, fire brigade, and several municipal secretari​es.

Authorities have prepared the Karl Heinz Kopittke Municipal Gymnasium as an emergency shelter and arranged a specially equipped truck to transport residents and pets. Residents in vulnerable neighbourhoods, such as Barrinha, are urged to gather documents and essential items and remain ready for possible relocation. The city continues to monitor river levels and will implement further measures if necessary.
