Rio dos Sinos flood response in Brazil
Entities: Jarbas Bilhar · Campo Bom · Municipal Defense Civil of Rio Grande do Sul · Gymnasium Karl Heinz Kopittke · Rio dos Sinos
Overview
In late July 2026, civil‑defence authorities in Rio Grande do Sul first reported that the Rio dos Sinos in Taquara remained stable, with water levels around 5.5 m and no immediate flooding risk. Continuous monitoring, including drone surveillance, was maintained and only minor road closures were noted.
A week later, heavy rains caused the river to rise sharply in nearby Campo Bom, reaching 7.12 m, close to the municipal flood alert threshold of 7.20 m. The city activated its municipal contingency plan, set up an incident command system, and prepared an emergency shelter at the municipal gymnasium, while urging residents in vulnerable neighbourhoods to ready essential documents and be prepared for possible relocation.
