Vale do Ribeira floods displace 152 families in São Paulo
Severe flooding in the Vale do Ribeira region of southern São Paulo has displaced approximately 152 families, forcing them into 19 temporary emergency shelters. The flooding, caused by heavy rainfall between Friday and Sunday, led to the overflowing of the Ribeira do Iguape River, which rose 11 meters above its normal level.
Local municipalities, including Barra do Turvo, Iporanga, and Eldorado, have officially declared states of emergency to facilitate the acquisition of state and federal resources. In Barra do Turvo, three neighborhoods remain isolated, affecting roughly 450 people. The floods have also impacted quilombola communities, with some areas facing disruptions in water and electricity supplies.
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas has announced a contingency plan that includes the deployment of 16 boats and two Eagle helicopters for rescue and supply transport. The state government is also providing humanitarian aid, such as food, clothing, and medicine. To prevent post-flood disease outbreaks, the State Health Secretariat has distributed 159,000 bottles of sodium hypochlorite for water treatment and provided stocks of antitetanus and anti-venom serums.
