Flooding in Vale do Ribeira region

Overview

Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in the Vale do Ribeira region, affecting areas across the border of São Paulo and Paraná. The storms, which included 160 millimeters of rain over a 72-hour period, caused the Ribeira do Iguape River to rise 11 meters above normal levels.

In São Paulo, the cities of Eldorado, Barra do Turvo, and Iporanga have declared states of emergency. The flooding has displaced approximately 152 families, who are currently residing in 19 emergency shelters. In Barra do Turvo, three neighborhoods remain isolated, affecting roughly 450 people. The floods have also impacted quilombola communities, with some areas facing disruptions in water and electricity supplies.

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas has deployed 16 boats and two Eagle helicopters to assist with rescues and deliver food, medicine, and hygiene supplies. To prevent post-flood disease outbreaks, the State Health Secretariat has distributed 159,000 bottles of sodium hypochlorite for water treatment and provided stocks of antitetanus and anti-venom serums.

In Paraná, 58 municipalities have been affected, impacting approximately 13,762 people. Governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior visited Rio Branco do Sul to assess the damage. Infrastructure damage remains significant, with landslides and road closures reported on the BR-476 highway in Adrianópolis and Tunas do Paraná. In Cerro Azul, rainfall levels have exceeded double the monthly average for September.

Emergency teams from the Fire Department, Civil Defense, and utility companies such as Copel and Sanepar are working to restore power, clear debris, and manage blocked roads.
