Floods in South Africa's Western Cape destroy farm workers' homes, displace 2,200

Heavy storms on 12 May 2026 caused the river to burst its banks in the Cape Winelands, flooding the Kleinberg farm in De Doorns, Western Cape. The flood destroyed the homes of four farm‑worker families and partially washed away several others, leaving belongings scattered in mud. Over 2,200 people were displaced across the district municipality.

Farm workers such as Abraham Douglas recalled the danger, saying, “I almost lost my grandchild. I almost lost my life.” Douglas and his six‑year‑old grandchild escaped by climbing onto the roof and were later rescued by rope. Other residents were carried out on stretchers, and many now sleep in the farm’s crèche. Relief assistance has been provided by the charitable group Gift of the Givers while families determine whether they can rebuild.
