South Africa weather hazards and flood impacts
Overview
In early May 2026, a cut‑off low‑pressure system prompted heightened alerts for the Western Cape and KwaZulu‑Natal, with road‑safety warnings and winter‑readiness plans. The Kouga Dam in the Western Cape rose to 113% capacity, overflowed and forced the evacuation of about 50 residents from low‑lying areas along the Gamtoos River; authorities opened community halls as shelters and warned farmers to move livestock. The Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed the dam remained structurally sound despite inflows exceeding design levels. Severe weather across six provinces from 4 May caused heavy rain, thunderstorms, high winds and even snowfall, killing at least ten people and damaging more than 10,000 informal‑settlement structures. President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national disaster, enabling emergency funding and coordinated response. The World Bank warned that repeated infrastructure failures – in roads, bridges, drainage, electricity and water supply – could shave up to two percentage points from annual GDP growth, while businesses faced rising backup‑power and logistics costs. Rand Water and the City of Cape Town issued water‑use restrictions as storm‑laden dams suffered increased turbidity, and Eskom’s winter maintenance led to pump shutdowns in Gauteng. Power outages lasting days affected the Garden Route and prompted food‑safety alerts. Flooding destroyed farm‑worker homes in De Doorns, displacing over 2,200 people, and humanitarian groups provided emergency shelter. June brought a cold front with freezing temperatures, snow in the Eastern Cape highlands and damaging wind warnings for the Northern and Western Cape, leading to school closures, road and pass shutdowns, and heightened alerts for high‑sided vehicles. A yellow warning for severe thunderstorms and hail was issued in July, adding to the series of weather‑related disruptions that have persisted throughout the year. In early September, a new cold front triggered multiple high-level warnings from the South African Weather Service.
