South Africa weather crisis and flood impacts

Entities: Free State · Eastern Cape · South African Weather Service (SAWS) · South African Weather Service · Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC)

Overview

Early May floods in the Western Cape and KwaZulu‑Natal prompted evacuations, dam‑safety checks and a national‑disaster declaration after at least ten deaths and widespread damage to informal settlements. Infrastructure – roads, bridges, drainage, power and water supply – was severely strained, leading to World Bank warnings on economic impacts and to water‑use restrictions in Cape Town and Gauteng. By late June, a strong cold front brought yellow warnings for the Western Cape, heavy rain, north‑westerly winds and fog, reviving flood risk and creating hazardous sea conditions along the south‑west coast. The same system produced cold, windy weather across the Northern and Western Cape and reduced visibility in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Free State. On 11 July the South African Weather Service issued a level‑1 yellow warning for severe thunderstorms nationwide. Large hail, damaging winds and localized flooding were forecast, especially in low‑lying areas of Mpumalanga, with frost and fog patches expected in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. Alerts highlighted continued threats to roads, bridges and settlements still recovering from May’s floods. A brief lull in mid‑July saw fine, cool skies and high UV‑B indexes, but reconstruction and transport networks remained under pressure. On 24 July a yellow Level 1 warning was issued for damaging winds across the Northern Cape (Kamiesberg, Nama Khoi, Richterveld) and Western Cape (Matzikama), with sand accumulation on coastal routes, risks to high‑sided vehicles and temporary structures. Fine to cool conditions were expected elsewhere, with high UV‑B in Gauteng and morning frost in parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and North West. Fog and reduced visibility were forecast for Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and other regions.
