Florence bus drivers resign in numbers amid labor disputes

Labor unions representing Autolinee Toscane drivers have reported approximately 50 resignations in Florence since the beginning of 2026. The unions, including Filt-Cgil, Fit-Cisl, Uil Trasporti, and Ugl, are calling for urgent interventions from the Florence Municipality and the Tuscany Region to address critical working conditions.

Workers have cited high levels of stress, responsibility, and physical exhaustion as primary reasons for leaving. Specific grievances include inadequate scheduling that does not account for actual travel times, difficulties managing bus terminals, and conflicts with passengers. Additionally, the lack of dedicated bus lanes and the presence of private vehicles at bus stops have exacerbated service issues.

Union representatives stated that previous requests for assistance—sent to the Tuscany Region in June regarding travel time adjustments and to the Florence Municipality in July regarding parking enforcement—have received no response. They warn that without structural improvements to urban planning and working conditions, the stability of the city's strategic public transport sector remains at risk.
