Flores earthquake: 94 deaths reported in refugee camps
Data from the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) reveals that 94 people died while staying in earthquake refugee camps in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). This figure is nearly double the 48 deaths reported as direct results of the earthquake tremors.
According to verifications by the Ministry of Health, the majority of those who died in the camps were elderly individuals suffering from complications related to chronic illnesses. However, the high mortality rate in the shelters has sparked criticism regarding the government's ability to protect vulnerable populations. Issues cited include inadequate tent facilities, poor sanitation, limited medical services, and extreme temperature fluctuations.
Legal advocates from Walhi have suggested that the high death toll may constitute a failure of the state to meet its legal obligations under Law Number 24 of 2007 concerning Disaster Management. This law mandates that the government ensure basic needs—such as clean water, food, clothing, and healthcare—are met and that priority is given to vulnerable groups during evacuation and recovery efforts. In response, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) is calling for a comprehensive audit and evaluation of post-earthquake refugee management.
