Flores earthquake causes widespread destruction and casualties in Indonesia

A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake off the coast of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara has caused widespread destruction, leaving at least 73 people dead and hundreds injured. The disaster has damaged over 11,900 homes, hundreds of schools, and numerous health facilities and places of worship. More than 40,000 people remain in temporary shelters and evacuation centers.

Authorities have recorded over 3,000 aftershocks, with experts predicting seismic activity could continue for up to four weeks. In response, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is coordinating aid, including 398 tons of food and shelter supplies. The government has deployed military aircraft and ships to reach remote mountainous areas where road damage has slowed distribution.

To assist in rebuilding, the government has announced a compensation scheme: 15 million IDR for lightly damaged homes and 30 million IDR for moderately damaged ones. For those with severely damaged residences, options include temporary housing or a 600,000 IDR housing waiting fund while permanent structures are built. While some businesses and local government offices have begun to reopen, recovery efforts remain focused on immediate humanitarian needs and infrastructure repair.
