Flores earthquake impacts trigger water and food shortages

The Flores region in East Nusa Tenggara continues to face significant challenges following earthquake activity. According to Walhi NTT Executive Director Yuvensius Stefanus Nonga, the impact extends beyond structural damage to include critical shortages of food and water. In nearly all areas monitored during emergency response efforts, residents have struggled to access clean water sources, which have seen decreased flow or altered quality, a situation exacerbated by the current dry season.

Nonga noted that these shortages create additional social risks within the community. Some areas have reportedly not yet received optimal government assistance.

In a separate seismic event on September 27, 2026, a magnitude 1.8 earthquake occurred 32 kilometers north of Ruteng, Manggarai, at a depth of three kilometers. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded the tremor, though initial reports did not indicate specific impacts on the local population.
