Flores earthquake recovery focuses on resilient infrastructure and energy restoration

Following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesian authorities and energy providers are coordinating recovery efforts in Flores. Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo has announced that the reconstruction of damaged public facilities and places of worship will follow a ‘build-back-better’ principle, ensuring new structures are strengthened to withstand future seismic activity.

During inspections of the Nurul Huda Reo Mosque and St. Peter and Paul Church in Dampek, the Minister emphasized that reconstruction must integrate local wisdom through close coordination with community leaders, such as the Ruteng Diocese. While severely damaged buildings will be rebuilt, repairable structures will undergo rehabilitation.

Simultaneously, Pertamina has reported significant progress in restoring energy infrastructure. As of late August 2026, 56 gas stations across eight regencies in Flores have returned to full operation, supporting the distribution of fuel and humanitarian aid to affected populations.
