Flores earthquake death toll rises to 83 in Indonesia

The death toll from the 7.7 magnitude earthquake on Indonesia’s Flores island has risen to 83 people, according to local authorities. The disaster has also resulted in 986 injuries and significant property damage.

Approximately 111,000 residents have been evacuated due to ongoing seismic activity. The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reports that more than 4,250 aftershocks, ranging in magnitude from 1.1 to 6.2, have occurred since the initial quake. Authorities estimate that 45,000 homes have been affected, with over 17,100 sustaining heavy damage.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers near Ende, also triggered waves nearly one meter high. In response to the crisis, organizations such as Peruri and the Labuan Bajo District Court have begun distributing logistical aid, including food and essential supplies, to affected regions in East Nusa Tenggara.
