Flores earthquake causes massive displacement and casualties in Indonesia
A massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island on August 15, 2026, triggering a major humanitarian crisis in Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) province. The disaster has resulted in at least 115 deaths and left over 172,000 people displaced.
Infrastructure damage is extensive, with approximately 90,600 homes reported damaged or destroyed. Public services have also been heavily impacted, including over 2,200 schools, 661 health facilities, and hundreds of government offices and places of worship. The region continues to experience frequent aftershocks, complicating recovery efforts.
Relief operations are underway through various channels. The NTT provincial government is coordinating integrated emergency responses to meet basic needs and protect vulnerable groups. In Bali, Korem 163/Wira Satya has organized a convoy of nine trucks to deliver humanitarian aid to Labuan Bajo. Additionally, Caritas Indonesia has provided medical assistance, food, and hygiene kits to more than 70,000 people across the most affected dioceses, including Ende, Ruteng, Maumere, and Labuan Bajo.
