Indonesia earthquake: 7.7 magnitude tremor strikes Flores region FAST-MOVING

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia near Flores Island on August 15, 2026. The shallow tremor, recorded at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, had its epicenter located about 68 kilometers northwest of the city of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province.

Following the quake, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued tsunami warnings for several provinces, including East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi. Authorities advised residents in coastal areas to move to higher ground and stay away from beaches and riverbanks.

Minor tsunami waves were detected by tide gauges in several locations, including Sikka (0.19 meters), Labuan Bajo (0.36 meters), and Dompu (0.17 meters). The earthquake was followed by several significant aftershocks, including tremors with magnitudes of 5.6, 5.9, and 6.1. While reports of building damage on Flores Island have circulated on social media, there were no immediate confirmed reports of mass casualties.
