Florian Wirtz faces mixed reviews after Liverpool's draw
Following FC Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Newcastle United, German international Florian Wirtz has faced mixed reactions regarding his early Premier League form.
Football pundit Gary Neville criticized Wirtz for a perceived lack of aggression and determination. Neville noted that Wirtz and teammate Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool for a combined approximately 270 million euros, appeared ‘too nice’ and lacked the necessary grit to succeed in the league. Neville compared Wirtz’s playing style to players like Mesut Özil and Kai Havertz, suggesting he lacks the physical intensity required for the role.
In contrast, former German international Mats Hummels expressed strong confidence in Wirtz’s potential for the season. Hummels predicted that Wirtz could achieve more than 25 or even 30 goal contributions (goals and assists) in the league alone. This projection would represent a significant personal record for the 23-year-old, who recorded 23 goal contributions during his final season in the Bundesliga before his high-profile transfer.
