Florian Wirtz's form and leadership at Liverpool

Overview

Florian Wirtz has experienced a resurgence in form following a difficult adaptation period at Liverpool. After facing scrutiny regarding his output since his high-profile transfer, Wirtz showed improved performance during the international break, notably scoring against Serbia and playing well in a draw against Greece.

This uptick in performance led to increased recognition of his leadership potential. Jurgen Klopp signaled confidence in the 23-year-old, recently appointing him captain for a match against Greece to help address leadership voids following the departures of Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson.

However, Wirtz has recently faced renewed scrutiny following a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City. Critics such as Jamie Carragher have argued that his performance has not justified his transfer fee, suggesting he should be dropped from the starting lineup. Statistical concerns have also been raised, noting he scored only seven goals in 49 appearances during the 2025/26 season and has yet to score in the current campaign's opening matches. While Steven Gerrard suggested Wirtz “needs help” from his manager and teammates to regain confidence, manager Andoni Iraola has defended the midfielder. Iraola cautioned against unrealistic expectations, noting Wirtz is valued for game control rather than high goal tallies, and pointed to a recent Champions League goal against Villarreal as a sign of development.

Despite transfer interest from Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich, Liverpool reportedly has no plans to sell Wirtz. Julian Brandt continues to support the midfielder, describing him as ‘by far the best player in Germany.’
