Florida announces $60 million in cancer research funding

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced $60 million in awards for cancer research and innovation through the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Additionally, a new funding cycle for the 2026-27 fiscal year has been opened, providing $70 million to researchers, which marks a $10 million increase from the previous cycle.

Since 2019, the state of Florida has invested more than $1.4 billion in cancer research and treatment. State funding for these programs has increased by over 175% during the current administration. The Florida Cancer Innovation Fund, established in 2023 with an initial $20 million, has supported nearly 150 projects across the state, including work by universities, medical institutions, and startups.

The upcoming $70 million funding round will prioritize projects focused on new therapies, nutritional prevention, data management infrastructure, and patient-centered solutions. State officials noted that cancer remains the second leading cause of death in Florida, with estimates suggesting nearly four in ten residents will receive a diagnosis in their lifetime.
