Florida cancer research funding and clinical trials

Overview

The state of Florida has expanded its investment in oncology through the Florida Cancer Innovation Fund. The state announced $60 million in awards for the 2025-26 fiscal year, with a subsequent funding cycle for 2026-27 increasing to $70 million. Since 2019, Florida has invested over $1.4 billion in cancer research and treatment.

As part of these research efforts, Florida has launched a Phase-2 clinical trial, known as ICONIC (NCT07487805), to evaluate the efficacy of the antiparasitic drug ivermectin in treating solid tumors. The study involves enrolling approximately 80 adult patients who are undergoing immune-checkpoint inhibitor therapy. Participants will receive varying oral doses of ivermectin to measure changes in activated CD8-T cells and assess safety. The trial is scheduled to begin in September and is expected to conclude by the end of 2027.
