Florida lawmakers push for U.S. Space Academy on Space Coast

Florida lawmakers are advancing legislation to establish a new U.S. Space Academy on the state’s Space Coast. U.S. Representatives Byron Donalds and Mike Haridopolos have filed House companion legislation to support the STARS Act, which was introduced in the Senate by Senator Ashley Moody.

The proposed academy is intended to train future officers for the U.S. Space Force while providing workforce support for NASA and the commercial spaceflight industry. The initiative aims to integrate academic training with existing regional infrastructure, such as Patrick Space Force Base and Space Launch Delta 45.

Proponents highlight the region's rapid growth, noting that commercial and military launches from Florida’s Space Coast have increased more than fivefold since 2016. The proposal follows a federal request for information regarding potential sites for the academy and does not involve establishing new federal spending.
