Florida Learjet crash: Family and mentors defend deceased co-pilot

Following the fatal crash of a Learjet 60 in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, family members and aviation mentors are defending the reputation of 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras. The aircraft, which was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas, crashed into a residential area, killing all nine people on board, including tech entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his family, and crew members.

Filgueiras’ father, Allan Filgueiras, and her flight instructor, Chris Kirk, have spoken out against online criticism regarding her experience level. Kirk described her as the “most naturally gifted” student he had taught in 40 years, noting that she had aced her exams and possessed a deep passion for flying. Her father expressed immense pride in her courage, noting that she remained professional and continued to communicate with air traffic control during the aircraft’s rapid descent.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman also defended Filgueiras, stating she was performing her duties correctly by communicating the emergency to air traffic control. The National Transportation Safety Board is currently investigating the causes of the crash, which involved severe turbulence and an overspeed condition during a thunderstorm.
