Florida man sentenced for planning murder via ChatGPT

Darren Zhou, a former Goldman Sachs financial analyst, has been sentenced in Florida after using ChatGPT to plan the murder and kidnapping of his ex-girlfriend. The case came to light after OpenAI issued an emergency alert to the FBI regarding the user's detailed threats and descriptions of a murder-suicide plan.

According to court documents, Zhou used the AI tool to express intentions to harm his former partner, Rachel Eden Wachterman, and her family. He also detailed his acquisition of weapons, including an AR-15 style rifle, a Glock pistol, and a 12-gauge shotgun. Following the alert, the FBI transferred the conversation logs to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.

Zhou pleaded guilty to charges including death threats or bodily harm, credible threats via cyberstalking, and the illegal use of a two-way communication device to commit a crime. He received eight years of probation and several other legal restrictions as part of his plea agreement.
