Florida Supreme Court upholds Republican congressional map

The Florida Supreme Court ruled 6‑1 on Wednesday that the state can use the newly drawn congressional map for the 2026 midterm elections. The court declined to issue a temporary injunction, saying it lacks jurisdiction while the case proceeds in lower courts.

The map, approved by the Republican‑controlled legislature on April 29 and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, is projected to add up to four GOP‑held House seats, increasing the party’s share from 20 of 28 seats to as many as 24. Plaintiffs—voter groups arguing the map violates Florida’s constitutional ban on partisan gerrymandering—were denied relief. Attorney General James Uthmeier hailed the decision as a “complete and total victory,” while opponents such as Equal Ground’s Genesis Robinson called the ruling “a brazen partisan power grab.” The decision clears the way for candidates to file by the Friday deadline ahead of the Aug. 18 primaries.
