Florida to include citizenship status on driver's licenses by 2027
Florida will begin incorporating U.S. citizenship status on certain driver's licenses and identification cards starting in 2027. This change follows the approval of House Bill 991 by Governor Ron DeSantis.
Under Florida Statute 322.034, by July 1, 2027, licenses and IDs issued to qualified applicants recorded as U.S. citizens in the system must include that information. This distinction will be applied during the issuance, renewal, or replacement of state credentials. Additionally, individuals who naturalize must obtain a replacement credential within 30 calendar days of becoming citizens to reflect their updated status.
The legislation also mandates that residents must update their credentials within 30 days of a legal name change or a change in legal residence or mailing address. Failure to comply with these obligations is classified as a non-moving violation, carrying a base fine of $30, plus additional court costs, administrative fees, and assessments.
