Florida driver license and ID updates

Overview

Florida is implementing significant changes to its state-issued identification credentials. Following the approval of House Bill 991 by Governor Ron DeSantis, the state will begin incorporating U.S. citizenship status on certain driver’s licenses and identification cards by July 1, 2027. Under this legislation, qualified applicants recorded as U.S. citizens must have that information included on their credentials during issuance, renewal, or replacement. Naturalized citizens are required to obtain replacement credentials within 30 days of gaining citizenship.

In a separate development regarding the physical appearance of these documents, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) is launching redesigned driver licenses and ID cards. Announced by Governor DeSantis, the new cards feature various state-themed elements, such as the Castillo de San Marcos, a manatee, and an alligator. According to FLHSMV Executive Director Dave Kerner, the redesign is intended to “enhance security and address emerging fraud trends” while maintaining REAL ID compliance.
