Călin Georgescu faces court appeal over fraud and organized crime charges

The Bucharest Court of Appeal is reviewing a challenge by DIICOT prosecutors regarding the decision to place former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen under judicial control rather than preventive arrest.

The investigation centers on allegations of forming an organized criminal group and fraud involving a proposed 6 million euro credit line for a precious metals business. Businessman Răzvan Leu claims he was defrauded of 1.1 million euros after providing a guarantee. Prosecutors further allege that 100,000 euros of these funds were intended to finance Georgescu's presidential campaign.

DIICOT has also ordered the seizure of Georgescu's villa in Mogoșoaia to recover the estimated 1.1 million euro loss. Prosecutors are currently seeking a 30-day preventive arrest for Georgescu.
