Flu activity rises early in US, UK, and Japan

Epidemiological data suggests the influenza season may begin earlier than expected in several countries. Experts are closely monitoring increased viral activity in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

According to reports in the journal ‘Nature’, unusually high numbers of positive flu tests have been recorded in the early autumn, particularly along the US West Coast and in the UK. In Japan, cases identified during August and early September led to the temporary closure of some schools as students were returning to classes.

In the United States, preliminary data indicates that the H1N1 strain of Influenza A is currently dominant. For the week ending September 26, H1N1 accounted for 96% of typed cases in the US, a shift from the previous season which was dominated by the H3N2 variant. While these figures reflect tested samples rather than the entire population, scientists continue to monitor the situation as the dominance of specific strains can shift throughout the season.
