Early influenza epidemic in Japan

Overview

Japan is experiencing an unusually early influenza epidemic, with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reporting that the threshold for epidemic status was met during the week of August 17. This marks the second earliest onset on record.

As of early September, cases have been increasing in 39 prefectures, with Okinawa reporting the highest number of patients per medical institution. In Ishikawa Prefecture, a seasonal outbreak occurred nine days earlier than the previous season, involving 85 students at Komatsu Technical High School. The school closed until September 8 following reports of fever.

By September 9, Oita Prefecture also declared the start of its epidemic period. Experts have suggested that the spread may be driven by increased inbound tourism and poor ventilation in air-conditioned indoor spaces during extreme heat. The outbreak has prompted school closures in regions including Fukushima and Kumamoto.

Health officials continue to warn that summer cases may be misidentified as heatstroke or common colds, potentially delaying medical consultation. Because many individuals have not yet received seasonal vaccinations, medical professionals note that symptoms may appear more severe. In response, several municipalities, such as Tokyo’s Shinagawa and Minato wards, are moving up scheduled vaccination dates for the elderly to late September.
