Flávio Bolsonaro moves toward Republicanos alliance as scandals surface

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL‑RJ), a pre‑candidate for Brazil’s 2026 presidential election, has intensified talks with the Republicanos party to secure its backing. Party leaders Valdemar Costa Neto and Rogério Marinho met with Republicanos heads Marcos Pereira and other state figures in Brasília, targeting alliances in Acre, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Roraima and Minas Gerais. While the national pact remains unsettled due to regional impasses, the parties aim to cement a joint front before the PL convention on 25 July.

At the same time, Flávio’s campaign faced a series of controversies. He condemned the Federal Police’s search of his father Jair Bolsonaro’s home as a “cortina de fumaça” intended to distract from his work in the United States. Allies expressed concern that personal‑life videos could be leaked, and a publicist, Thiago Miranda, was identified as the intermediary who connected Flávio to banker Daniel Vorcaro and facilitated R$ 134 million in payments through a U.S.‑based fund.

The private sector also criticized Flávio’s appearance at a USTR hearing in Washington, describing his political‑focused remarks as “out of place” and “embarrassing” for the trade discussion. Together, these developments illustrate the complex blend of alliance building, legal scrutiny and reputational challenges surrounding Flávio Bolsonaro’s bid.
