Flávio Bolsonaro delays Senate candidacy announcement, cites legal concerns and US trip
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL‑RJ), a pre‑candidate for the 2026 presidential election, postponed the decision on the party’s Senate candidate for Rio de Janeiro. He said an early announcement could provoke a reaction from the Supreme Federal Court, especially from ministers Flávio Dino and Alexandre de Moraes, and expose the nominee to new investigations. Potential candidates discussed include deputies Carlos Jordy, Sóstenes Cavalcante and Senator Carlos Portinho.
Bolsonaro also criticised recent Federal Police searches at his father Jair Bolsonaro’s house, calling the operation a “smokescreen” meant to distract the media. He described the searches as unnecessary and embarrassing for his family.
In July, Bolsonaro extended his stay in the United States to attend a hearing before the U.S. Trade Representative’s office on alleged tariffs against Brazil. He said the extra day was needed to defend Brazil and to hold further meetings, leading him to postpone a scheduled event in Pernambuco.
These moves reflect Bolsonaro’s effort to manage legal challenges, media narratives, and international trade negotiations as he positions himself for the upcoming election.
