Flávio Bolsonaro faces backlash over sexist remarks as allies distance themselves

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a pre‑candidate for the Brazilian presidency, sparked controversy at the Liberal Party’s national communication seminar by claiming “the women‑folk rule the house and Brazil.” The comments followed earlier remarks made by his adviser, blogger Paulo Figueiredo, who said women “vote badly as hell.” Bolsonaro stayed silent on the adviser’s statement and later rejected responsibility for the comments.

The fallout prompted former agriculture minister Tereza Cristina, a potential running‑mate, to keep a “distance of safety” from Bolsonaro. Cristina declined an invitation to a women‑focused event organized by the party, citing a prior commitment with the National Confederation of Industry. Other party leaders, including PL president Valdemar Costa Neto and Senator Rogério Marinho, continued to promote Bolsonaro’s campaign, while the senator also pledged tougher security policies, such as treating criminal gangs as terrorist groups and removing cell phones from prisoners.
